ARTIST BIOS
Debbie Lan is a performing, recording, singing, songwriting, teaching-artist musician who has performed in South Africa (her country of origin), Japan, France, England, America and Canada, solo, with various bands and playback theatre companies. She has sung in theaters, clubs, barns, schools, halls, malls, fields, living rooms, studios, pubs, gardens, bars, auditoriums, on vinyl, in showers, cars, chanting groups, classrooms, poolside, on street corners, next to escalators, in airplanes and most importantly at her daughters birthdays and bedside.
Debbie has very much enjoyed herself working and singing with toddlers through 8th graders. After teaching for five years at various local establishments (High Meadow School, Lederman’s Children’s Centre, Winter Bear Montessori among others ) Debbie now runs Music Immersion classes for children, (birth through nine years old,) an Adult Vocal Ensemble, and teaches private Vocal and Music Immersion students.
Debbie performs with Hudson River Playback Theater, Dog On Fleas, Barbara Dempsey and Co. and solo. And she loves singing all kinds of songs in all kinds of places with all kinds of people of all kinds of ages.
Story behind the songs:
"On Your Side" - I wrote this song for my daughter a few years ago. It was fun to write as it’s one of those songs that just kind of popped into my head, almost fully written.
"True True Friend" - This song was written for our musical last year ( a collaborative piece, interpreted and adapted by Allison Uzzle and the 7th/ 8th graders – the challenge was to take the epic poem ‘Beouwolf’ and make it into a musical comedy!) and we needed a sweet song for four of our sweet girls, and so I wrote this for them. "It’s in Everyone of Us" - This is a piece of a larger song (written by Dave Pomeranz and recorded by The Hollies, Freddie Mercury and Cliff Richard among others) now sung traditionally for our end of year celebration in the lower school.
